So, we had them tested anyway and of course they all came back 100% perfect. Ive now discovered a press article from 2015/16 where BMW recalled various models built between 2007 and 2011 due to cars cutting out while driving. This recall was after a fatal accident in England and affected both petrol and Diesel models.

He did the timing part of things, and I took it all apart and put it back together. Prior to doing the timing chain it ran fine, except for a cyclical noise coming from the chain, which is no longer there.

It also got excellent mpg’s, sometimes above 30 on road trips. However the repairs and reliability were getting to be too much. The DEF tank or sensors failed multiple times, including once while on a road trip. The car put a message up of ‘will not restart in 300 miles’, which is really comforting when you’re 1,000 miles from home.
